Formaldehyde is an organic compound (chemical formula CH2O). It is an important ingredient in the manufacture of furniture and industrial wood products. However, it is also a substance that causes a lot of controversy about safety for users.

The use of formaldehyde in furniture manufacturing

In the furniture industry, Formaldehyde is used as a primary binder in the manufacture of materials such as plywood, floor coverings and wall panels. It is added to these products to give them greater durability and resistance to moisture and termites.

 

However, it is also a carcinogen that has been classified in group 1 (carcinogens to humans) by the World Health Organization (WHO). The use of formaldehyde-containing furniture products can cause many health problems, including irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, rashes, headaches, and breathing difficulties.

 

Therefore, to protect human health, many countries have applied regulations restricting the use of this substance in the production of interior products.

Safety standards related to Formaldehyde

These standards can be applied globally or be regulated in individual countries. In the US, the CARB (California Air Resources Board) standard has been applied to limit Formaldehyde emissions in wood products.

 

In addition, E0, E1, E2 are common standards in Europe and Asia. These standards stipulate that the formaldehyde content in wood products ranges from very low to moderate.

 

  • The E0 standard is used to evaluate the safety of industrial wood products only, with formaldehyde concentrations below 0.4 mg/liter. This is the highest level and shows that the laminate product contains almost no harmful substances.

 

  • Standard E1 applies to wood products with formaldehyde concentrations from 0.4mg/liter to 1.5mg/liter. This is the standard level, ensuring that industrial wood products are not toxic during use.

 

  • The last is the E2 standard, which applies to wood products with a formaldehyde concentration greater than 1.5mg/liter. These are high levels and can be harmful to human health, so consumers should avoid using wood products with emission concentrations that exceed this standard.

How to handle toxic odors in interior products

Some ways to deal with toxic odors from Formaldehyde in furniture include:

 

  • Ventilation: Open doors and windows to help air circulate and remove harmful odors from Formaldehyde.

  • Use activated carbon: Activated carbon has the ability to adsorb harmful substances and is an effective solution to remove emissions from interior products.

  • Use deodorant products: Products such as air purifiers, dehumidifiers, or cleaning products are capable of deodorizing harmful odors.

Laminates are becoming more and more popular in the design and construction materials industry. Although this is a high-quality product line, in order to not be damaged and durable over time, users also need to have a way to preserve it. Here are a few ways to help in the care and maintenance process for laminate material over time, recommended by the global brand Wilsonart®.

1. How to take care of your Wilsonart® laminate products?

The simplest way to clean Wilsonart® laminate is to wipe over the surface with a clean cloth, mild detergent (e.g. dishwashing liquid) and clean water. For more stubborn stains like coffee, you can use a soft brush to clean.

If the stain still doesn’t go away, use a mixture of baking soda and water, then scrub the stain with a soft-bristled brush. Be careful not to rub vigorously, as this can damage the laminate surface, especially products with glossy surfaces. 

For stubborn stains that cannot be resolved with the above methods, use an undiluted solid bleach mixture or nail polish remover. Apply the mixture to the stain and let it sit for no more than two minutes. Then rinse several times with warm water and dry it with a soft cloth. If the stain starts to fade and the color of the laminate is not affected, continue cleaning until the surface is clean.

 

2. Some maintenance methods for Wilsonart® laminate

Always wipe the laminate surface thoroughly with water after cleaning. Even a small amount of detergent left on the surface can be reactivated by moisture, leaving a permanent mark on the material.

 

When using knives, scissors or any other sharp object on the laminate surface, be sure to use something cover underneath. Their sharpness can damage the surface of laminates, affect their beauty and reduce their resistance to stains/abrasion.

 

For areas that are not cleaned regularly, you can use a furniture cleaner (not oil-free). Remember to stir the furniture polish several times a year to avoid building up in the bottle. Furniture polish also helps cover light scratches.

 

3. A few notes of caution

  • Limit the long-term exposure of the laminate surface with detergents because it will make the colors of the product fade away.

  • Do not place cleaner liquid on laminate surfaces without protection. Immediately remove spilled chemicals and wipe repeatedly with water.

  • Steel wool and other abrasive pads will damage the laminate surface. Do not use them to clean and do not leave them on the surface, the metal may rust and leave stains.

  • Do not use acidic cleaners as they can damage the laminate.
